Goat kids have very small stomachs at birth with a limited ability to drink, digest and absorb nutrients.  Research continues to support the benefits of multiple feedings per day in terms of improved gains and improved efficiency.

(Teh et al, 1984)

Machine Feeding

Machines are a useful feeding tool designed to provide multiple feedings/day with warm milk replacer that has been thoroughly mixed for even distribution of nutrients in the solution.  Labour efficiencies give kid managers more opportunities to identify problems instead of spending precious time measuring, preparing and feeding milk or milk replacer.  Machines still need human attention to ensure that they are working optimally.  Grober commits itself to providing technical support to ensure that the machine is providing the right nutrition for your kids.

Colostrum Source

  • first milk from the dam after giving birth
  • This milk is rich in antibodies – the proteins needed to begin building a strong immune system
Colostrum Source What are the concerns?
Dam Best source, unless there is a suspected disease
Female from another herd Best substitute, if similar disease status as home farm
Cow Lower in nutrition; possible Johne’s risk
Colostrum supplement Nutritious, no antibodies
Colostrum replacer Contains antibodies, check with manufacturer as to specific amounts
Homemade colostrum Lack of antibodies
Lamb or kid milk replacer Not a substitute for colostrum, feed after first 24 hours

Feeding Management

  • Multiple feedings/day highly recommended to stabilize pH of the abomasum
  • Encourage a strong suckling reflex early on so that milk is absorbed into the abomasum and digested
  • Creep (and water) should be introduced as early as 2 weeks, allow kids to explore their environment and taste different feedstuffs
  • Clean, dry bedding will optimize growth and enhance any feeding program
  • Any abnormal events (illness, dehorning, vaccination etc) should be followed up with a greater volume of milk at the next meal

o        kids will burn more energy when stressed

o        sucking can help calm animals and supplemental nutrition will help replenish energy reserves
