Colostrum

If at all possible newborn puppies should receive Colostrum (first mother’s milk) in the first 12 hours. This will provide antibodies necessary to provide protection against future infections.

General recommendations for Puppygro puppy milk replacer

  • Wash hands before handling and feeding puppy
  • Reconstituted PuppyGro puppy milk replacer should be fed at 100-102°F (body temperature).  Use a thermometer.
  • Mixing ratio should always be 1 measure powder per 2 measures water.
  • Boil fresh water before reconstituting Puppy-Gro.  Allow cooling time.
  • For first 15 days, offer milk solution from a nipple bottle, just deep enough in the mouth.

  • Clean ALL feeding utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water, wash with a detergent in hot (176oF) water, rinse with clean water (ideally a 10% bleach solution) and dry thoroughly with a ‘clean’ towel.
  • Reconstituted PuppyGro puppy milk replacer may be refrigerated up to 24 hours.  Discard any unused portion after 24 hours.
  • If warmed in microwave only use medium setting and mix thoroughly and regularly. Check temperature before feeding.
  • Frequent feeding of small amounts decreases chances of digestive upsets.
  • Weigh puppy regularly to ensure that they are consuming enough PuppyGro milk replacer.  Puppies should double their weight according to chart above.
  • If puppies are not gaining enough weight consult your veterinarian.
  • If puppies are crying excessively, they may not be getting enough to eat or they may be too cold.
    • Puppies need assistance to help urinate and defecate for the first 2 weeks of life after each feeding. You need to assist by using a warm moist cotton ball and massaging the puppy’s abdomen and anal area until they urinate and or defecate.  You must be persistent, this is very important to the puppy’s well being.
  • Puppies must be housed in a clean, warm, draft-free area.
  • Air temperature should be 85-90°F for the first week and 80°F for the next 3-4 weeks.  Use a thermometer.
  • At 2 weeks teach puppy to drink from a saucer.
  • At 35 days, start offering regular puppy feed in small amounts.  Weaning usually occurs at about 45 days
  • Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.

Housing and Weaning

Pregnant and lactating bitches: 1 teaspoons powder per 2lb body weight with regular ration until 2 weeks after whelping.

Growing puppies, show dogs and convalescing dogs: 1/2 teaspoon powder per 2lb body weight daily with regular ration.

NOTE: Store this product in a cool dry location, protected from the sun. To maintain freshness, keep partially used bag closed tightly after opening and store in a clean, closed, plastic container.
