Grober 20/20 recommended feeding program:

  • A scale provides the best precision for weighing milk replacer powder.
  • Free choice water should be offered at all times.
  • High quality colostrum or colostrum replacer should be fed to all newborn calves, 3-4 quarts within 6 hours for optimal defense against environmental pathogens.
  • Clean and rinse ALL feeding utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water, wash with a detergent in hot (180°F) water, rinse with clean water (ideally a weak, 5-10%, bleach solution) and dry thoroughly with a clean towel.
  • During extreme conditions (cold or wind), offer an extra feeding of milk replacer per day.
  • A good quality starter ration is an essential component to a calf nutrition program necessary for rumen development and transition from a milk diet.  Offer fresh amounts each day with free choice water; when calves are consuming 2-3lbs/day for several days this can be used as an indicator that they are ready to wean.

Large Batch (5 gallon):

Weigh 6.6 lbs in 3-4 gallons in 120°F water, mix to dissolve powder.  Add remaining water to bring final solution to 5 gallons.  Feed at calf body temperature (102-106°F).

Individual calf:

Powder/feed Quarts/ feed Feeds/day
Week 1 10 oz(284 g) 2 3
Week 2-6 15 oz(425 g) 3 2
Week 7-8 15 oz(425 g) 3 1

The feeding schedule should be adjusted based on the size and health status of the individual calf.
