Colostrum
Feed colostrum and
sow’s milk for the first 4 to 7 days where possible. Feeding 100ml of
colostrum, five times daily, during the first day will improve
substantially the survival rate of piglets raised on milk replacer.

piglet growth, increase concentration to a maximum of 190g/litre. |
General recommendations
-
The suggested
feeding program should be considered as a minimum. Approximately 2.5kg
milk replacer will be consumed per piglet.
- Quantities offered
should be adjusted to weight, increasing gradually from birth to
weaning.
- Any change in the
feeding schedule should be done with judgement, according to growth,
size and stool consistency.
- Frequent feeding of
small amounts will decrease chances of digestive upsets.
-
When
piglets show signs of diarrhea, or in cases of over-consumption, stop
feeding milk and start offering a high-energy electrolyte solution for
12 to max 24 hours. Once the diarrhea has cleared up, re-introduce the
milk.
- Clean ALL feeding
utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water, wash
with a detergent in hot (80oC) water, rinse with clean water (ideally a
5-10% bleach solution daily) and dry thoroughly with a ‘clean’ towel.
-
Fresh, clean
water should be available at all time. Position it close to where the
milk is offered.
-
Consult your veterinarian for any
signs of disease, fever, parasites etc……
Supplemental feeding to sow’s milk
-
Supplementary milk can be
introduced to the piglets as soon as 2 to 4 days of age.
-
The milk solution can be offered
via a nipple bottle or an open recipient. Both have to be maintained
clean, particularly the recipient that has been contaminated by urine or
faeces.
-
Milk can be served in an open
recipient or through a mechanically operated milk distribution system.
Feeding
orphaned piglets
-
For piglets reared completely
away from the sow, it is best if they receive sow’s milk for the first 2
to 4 days. If not possible, prepare a mixture of colostrum supplement
and milk replacer for that same period of time.
-
Weaning can be achieved when the
piglets are consuming a sufficient quantity of pre-starter.
