Colostrum
-
The newborn kid should receive 50ml/kg bodyweight maternal colostrum
(first mother’s milk) right after birth and every 6 hours in the
first 24hours.
-
This will help
provide protection against future infections.
-
First milking
colostrum of mature does can be kept frozen in ice cubes and slowly
thawed when needed.
-
For CAE free flock,
goat’s colostrum can be heat treated as long as some rules are
followed since the antibodies contained in colostrum are heat
sensitive.

or Grober representative for details.

General recommendations
-
Start
feeding milk replacer once newborn has received colostrum.
-
The
suggested feeding program should be considered as a minimum.
Approximately 10kg of milk replacer will be consumed per kid.
-
Quantities
offered should be adjusted to weight, increasing gradually from
birth to weaning.
-
Any change
in the feeding schedule should be done with judgement, according to
growth, size and stool consistency.
-
During the
first 2 weeks, feed 10% of kid’s body weight per day, offered in
three feedings
-
Frequent
feeding of small amounts will decrease chances of digestive upsets.
-
Weigh kids
regularly to ensure that milk intake is adequate
-
Reconstituted Kid-Gro may be refrigerated up to 24 hours.
Discard any unused portion after 24 hours.
-
The milk
replacer solution can be served in a nipple bottle or via a lamb
bar.
-
Free-choice milk is served at room temperature; do not leave lamb
bar empty for more than 2 hours.
-
Maximum
kids per group are 10. Teats should be at 40-45cm (16-18ins) above
the stall floor.
-
Clean ALL feeding
utensils and equipment after each feeding: rinse in lukewarm water,
wash with a detergent in hot water, rinse with clean water (ideally
a 5-10% bleach solution once a day) and dry thoroughly with a
‘clean’ towel.
-
Consult
your veterinarian for any signs of disease, fever, parasites, etc.
Starter ration,
water, forage and weaning
-
Introduce a quality starter ration from 7-10 days
of age; offer small quantities twice daily.
-
Offer good
quality roughage at 2 weeks of age. Do not feed silage before 6
weeks of age.
-
Fresh,
clean water should be always available, particularly when consuming
a significant amount of solids.
-
When the
kid is consuming a minimum of 120-250g of concentrate ration per day for
more than 2 consecutive days, the weaning process can be initiated.
Consult your local feed dealer for feed recommendations.
