Producer Objectives

  • Raising grain fed veal calves or replacement dairy heifers
  • Optimizing rumen development through grain/water intake
  • Improved immunity function by providing adequate levels of protein and balanced nutrition
  • Early wean program

Features and Benefits

  • Contains Selplex®
  • Contains highly digestible wheat gluten, lowers cost and encourages grain intake
  • Less lean muscle mass, but higher body mass for earlier weaning onto a full grain program

Milk Replacer Feeding Schedule

  • Based on 125g/L
  • When a calf’s ambient temperature falls below their comfort zone (calf 1-3 weeks below 15-25°C; calf 3 weeks plus below 10°C), extra nutrition should be provided to maintain growth and maintenance requirements
    • minimum 150g extra powder for a less than 3 week old calf
    • minimum 75g extra powder for 3+ week old calf

.

Feeding Management Tips

  • Multiple feedings/day recommended to stabilize pH of the abomasum
  • Encourage a strong suckling reflex early on so that milk is absorbed into the abomasum and digested
  • Grain (and water) should be introduced early on. Allow calves to explore their environment and taste different feedstuffs
  • Clean, dry bedding will optimize growth and enhance any feeding program
  • Any abnormal events (illness, dehorning, vaccination etc) should be followed up with a greater volume of milk replacer at the next meal – calves will burn more energy when stressed. Sucking will help calm calves and nutrition will help replenish energy reserves

Grain Quality

  • Grain is an important part of raising red veal
  • Veal is a unique food product that uses the offshoots of the dairy industry to produce a flavourful, easily digestible, tender meat product.
  • In order to achieve a good quality end product, care must be taken when selecting grains for feeding.
  • Grains should be stored in a cooler, dry environment to ensure that their quality is protected.
  • It is best to deal with a feedmill that is knowledgeable on what mycotoxins are of concern and test for quality purposes.
  • Before purchasing grain, it is always a good idea to review a specification sheet to see what levels of protein, fat and moisture are expected and compare these values to book values.
  • It is important to keep in mind that these animals have immature digestive tracts, so to encourage their growth high quality rations should be available.
